"It does feel as if I was always meant to do what I am doing in sculpting. I feel the importance of the steps taken by those that came before me, as do I feel the importance of the steps I take for the generations to come."

Born in 1981 into a lineage of artists, Lagasse's artwork captivates audiences with its creativity, symbolism, and lasting impact on the art world. At a young age Lagasse developed a particular affinity for graffiti and tagging in the Paris metro. Over the years, Karl's work had several influences by renowned artist Cesar Baldaccini who inspired him to further pursue his artistic career, also artist Yvaral Vasarely who suggested that Lagasse integrate his tags into his colleagues, a suggestion that greatly influenced his artistic style and also inspired by his love for America and its iconic symbols.

  • "I know my skill as a sculptor has been heightened with exposure to the film world. All art forms are tightly woven together whether it is film, music, painting, sculpture, music, poetry, dance, architecture. It is hard for one to thrive without the assistance of another art form. A sculptor has the ability to quite literally set the scene, be it for film or other occasions."

Karl is best known for his "One Dollar" sculptures. The dollar is the result of humility and reflection on what is possible to do with a dollar. This work comes in several sizes, shapes, materials and colors. Karl Lagasse's works are inspired both by the American world and his personal need to "build himself, to rise".  His admiration for the United States and its slogan "In God We Trust" is evident in his work. For Lagasse being an artist is a profession of faith, all of his works have hidden biblical messages. Karl's contributions to the art world have been widely recognized. He has participated in prestigious exhibitions, including the Art Monaco fair and solo exhibitions at renowned galleries. His sculptures, paintings, and installations have garnered international acclaim, and he has been ranked among the top ten sculptors in the world by Artprice, his work has been showcased in exhibitions worldwide. Since 2017, Karl has been entrusted with creating the trophy for the winners of the Deauville American Film Festival.

  • "The symbolism within the “One Dollar” is universal that is another reason why I chose it. I believe it represents us all. Strength, freedom, and the self-made man are just some of the powerful messages I wish to communicate to the world as a whole."

"I am humbled to be able to make a living with just a $1. I started out with the idea because I was intrigued with the notion of making art from just a dollar. But really, what captured my attention was the phrase on the back of the bill, “In God We Trust.” I was awestruck that such an admirable expression, so far from what I supposed commercial trade to be, would be seen on a bill. This led to me exploring more of what it would mean to have the dollar as an art piece."
